Lent and Easter 2023 at St. Francis

Shrove Sunday Pancake Brunch and Burning of the Palms
Join us Sunday, February 19, from 11:30am to 1pm, for “Shrove Sunday!” Pancakes are a traditional meal for the celebration immediately preceding Lent because eggs, sugar and fat, commonly forbidden during a Lenten fast, are used up so they will not go to waste. We will end by burning palm branches from 2022 for use on Ash Wednesday

Simple Supper and Introduction to the Way of Love in Lent
Join Laurie+ at 5:30pm on Wednesday, February 22, as she provides a simple soup supper and an introduction to the Way of Love in Lent, our Lenten series. (See description below.) Gather as a community on this sacred night no matter how you plan to take part in the series. RSVP to Laurie+ at laurie@stfranciseureka.com or sign up on the bulletin board.

Ash Wednesday Services
Join us at 12pm or 7pm for meditative Ash Wednesday services. Ash Wednesday is the first of the forty days of Lent, named for the custom of placing blessed ashes on the foreheads of worshipers at services as a sign of penitence and a reminder of mortality.

The Way of Love in Lent
The journey through Lent into Easter is a journey with Jesus. Together, we will walk through the depths of salvation history into the fullness of redemption through the lens of the seven ancient practices for a Jesus-centered life and the Easter vigil readings.  There are 3 ways to participate:

*In person with a group at 9:15am Sunday Forum, February 26-April 2; see individual session info here
*individually via YouTube videos, posted February 24-March 31
*with a group, but asynchronously, via Marco Polo, February 26-April 2 (ask for URL to join the group from the office or Laurie+)

Choose one way or all three to fit a changing schedule. Jump in for all seven session or participate as you can.

Lenten Conversations
Why do good people experience suffering? Explore this age-old question by reading the biblical book of Job and Fr. Richard Rohr’s commentary Job and the Mystery of Suffering. Then join us at 11am on Wed. March 8th as parishioner Skip Moreland explores the book of Job and on Wed. March 15th as Laurie+ leads discussion on Rohr’s book. Book available for purchase at church for $25 or on Amazon for $20 plus tax.

Holy Week 2023

Palm Sunday
Join the procession of the palms at 8am or 10:30am services. This service opens Holy Week which ends at sundown on the Saturday before Easter.

Compline
Join us at 8pm on Zoom for 20 minute prayers to end your day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week. Compline is the sweetest of the daily offices which asks for God’s protection during the night to come.

Maundy Thursday

Stations of the Cross
Begin your Good Friday observance at 7:30am with a 30-minute devotion to the Passion of Christ. The Way of the Cross imitates the practice of visiting the places of Jesus’s Passion in the Holy Land by early Christian pilgrims.

Good Friday
Join us at 12pm and 7pm for the commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus with veneration (reverencing) of the cross, in person at noon and in person and on YouTube at 7pm
